An easy Halloween craft for kids, these Haunted Houses are made of empty juice cartons and can be painted on over and over again thanks to chalkboard paint and chalkboard markers

Easy Haunted Houses Craft

My daughter, Ella, is a dedicated crafter.

If we have a free evening at home with no extra-curriculars, family obligations, or homework, you can be guaranteed that my dining room table will soon be covered in craft supplies.

I love indulging her creative nature, but the expense of craft supplies and the clutter from the constant creation can be a bit much, so I get really excited when we can get multiple uses out of supplies, or make crafts for practically free – which makes these Milk Carton Haunted Houses perfect for us! (Or any family that faces the same craft-induced craziness that we do.)

We already had chalkboard paint, but I think it was about $1.50 brand new, and the chalkboard markers were also inexpensive and can be used in sooo many different projects (painting rocks, pretty boards, chalkboard blocks, etc)  – but you can also use whatever paints you already have on hand if you don't care about the "reusable" nature of this craft.

I thought it was really cool that she could paint/draw one design on them, play with the houses, and then wipe off the design and do something completely different. (But since we always have a fresh supply of empty milk or juice cartons, it wouldn't be a big deal if we had to paint new cartons each time she wanted something different.)

You could also use this craft concept for other times of the year since chalkboard paint now comes in so many different colors! Pastel colored "Easter houses," or a tiny little Christmas village made out of chalkboard-painted milk cartons?

These would make a great craft for a playdate or classrooms, too!

Materials for Haunted House Carton Craft

  • Empty milk or juice cartons, well cleaned <– you can alternatively use planks of wood or blocks
  • Chalkboard paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors or X-acto knife, for grown-ups only
  • Chalk or chalk markers
  • Battery-operated tea lights

Tip: you can use regular paint to make these haunted houses, chalkboard paint is just fun if you want to re-draw on them over and over again.

How to Make Haunted House Cartons

Clean, rinse and dry your milk or juice cartons.

Apply a generous coat of chalkboard paint to the cartons. Follow the instructions on the paint bottle to prep the paint (often chalkboard paints require two coats and then for you to "season" the surface by rolling chalk over it before using). Let dry completely.

Cut windows and doors into your cartons with an exacto knife.

Add electric tea lights into the cartons for a spooky glow, and then draw designs on with chalkboard markers.

When you're done playing with your design, wipe it off and then draw something new.
